The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
