{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters close call with F1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event took place on the third circuit when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority
"On lap three, safety personnel were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were canceled and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"We are still investigating what transpired subsequent to that time"
